The Underwood Factory is an icon in the Bass Harbor community; older residents who packed sardines there still remember the whistle going off at quitting time. By the millennium, engineers were predicting the building would soon be beyond repair: walls had fallen, the brick work was in poor shape, and the foundation was eroding. Dick Campbell LLC got the plans approved, and shortly after the building was virtually gutted, countless window panes were removed, a century confined mustiness was aired out, and the bit of land around it bulldozed into heaps and pits. The cannery is now home to eight luxurious units looking over the harbor.
